Feelin’ the brotherly love, people

The City of Brotherly Love

While staying with my in-laws in the Philadelphia area over April vacation, we took a day trip to visit friends in New Jersey, and our route brought us through the heart of the city.

And, once again, a big shout out to Wonder Woman, who managed to capture this shot just as we were following the highway down to an underpass, and did so after I suddenly plopped the camera case in her lap and said “Do your thing, honey.” And, because the kids were in the car, she new I meant “Take a picture of the skyline, honey.”

We were married in Philly back in October of 1998. That building over on the left with the statue of the dude on top (William Penn, FYI) is City Hall, and it is where we had to obtain our marriage license. The pyramid-shaped top of that gray building on the right houses the aptly named Pyramid Club, where Wonder Woman and I attended a wedding back in 1996 (or ’97? I think ’96). We stayed at the Ritz Carlton that night. Back in those days, we didn’t have kids, and “Do your thing, honey” didn’t mean “Take a picture of the skyline.” *sigh*

I’ve experienced approximately 1.67% of what Philadelphia has to offer, and I wish to experience more. It seems like a fantastic city. Far larger—and less segregated—than Boston, yet much smaller and more manageable than New York.

Ever since we decided to move from Arizona back to the Northeast in 2000, we’ve struggled with choosing between Boston and Philadelphia. We do love it here in the Boston area … but Wonder Woman left for college at age 18 and wasn’t planning on never living near her family again. We’ve come close to relocating down there a couple of times since, but, thanks to the implosion of the housing market, we’d have to take a substantial five-figure bath in order to do so now—and it will shock you not a whole lot, I’m sure, to hear that we can not withstand a substantial five-figure bath.

Still, assuming we, at some point, have the means to do so, I believe we very well may someday reside in suburban Philadelphia. (Please stop clutching your chest, Mom; we’re not leaving anytime soon.)

  2. We live close to Philly and don’t go there as often as I’d like to. It is a great city.
