Many of the items that were part of the silent auction at last night’s fundraiser for the program where Wonder Woman works were Red Sox related … and because Zan went to work with WW yesterday, he, prior to the fundraiser, saw a number of these items … to include a baseball autographed by legendary Red Sox hitter David Ortiz, a.k.a. Big Papi.
WW let him take it out of the case at one point, and while he was holding it, he said, “Mommy, Big Papi held this ball, too!” He was very excited about the whole autographed-baseball concept. It clicked for him.
She explained to him about the ball being put up for auction, and he made it clear to both of us that he really, really, really wanted us to try to get it.
When we returned home from the fundraiser last night, Nana Scratches told us that Zan had some difficulty getting to sleep, and she was pretty sure it was because he was all worked up about possibly getting the ball.
Now, I couldn’t care much less about having an autographed baseball, and I certainly can’t imagine paying an exorbitant amount of money in order to obtain one for myself … but when Zan came into our bedroom at dark o’clock this morning and asked about the ball, it was pretty cool to be able to say, “We got it, buddy.”
We justified the cost by telling ourselves that the money was going to a good cause … which it was … but the fact of the matter is that it wasn’t a wholly benevolent transaction; I was willing to part with the cash largely because it feels good to be a hero to your 5-year-old son every once in a while.
