I sat down tonight with the intention of writing about our family foray to the mall a couple of days ago to get some portraits taken … but I just don’t have it in me. This week has really been kicking my ass, and between the excruciating back spasms I’m having right now, plus the sheer exhaustion I’m feeling, plus the fact that it’s midnight, plus what an unbelievably whiny little bitch I am, I feel compelled to go to bed … you know, so I can get up and do this shit all over again tomorrow (hopefully with the added twist of actually posting the aforementioned family-portrait entry and a new Photo of the Day).
SO …
Since I’m copping out on the creative front, I’ve decided to try remaining in your good graces by bribing you with the promise of a free CD. Thanks to my job, I get lots of them … to include John Mayer’s latest set, “Battle Studies,” which hit stores yesterday. The good news is, I received two copies — one of which is for me, and one of which is for one of you. The bad news is, compared to his previous album, “Continuum,” about which I raved a few years back, “Battle Studies” is weak sauce. But, hey, that’s just my opinion. Maybe it’ll grow on me.
Meanwhile, if you’d like to hear it for yourself, I’ll send you a copy … provided you are the lucky winner.
So here’s how I’m gonna do this: leave a comment on this post in which you name your favorite musical artist and favorite album by that artist (as well as any additional relevant thoughts you care to share). I’ll leave comments open from now until whenever I stumble to the computer on Friday (11/20) morning, at which point I’ll close the comments and use the Random Number Generator to select one lucky winner from all of the comments left on this post. Shortly thereafter, I will mail to said winner a brand-spanking-new, still-in-the-shrinkwrap copy of “Battle Studies.”
Yeah, I know it’s not an iPod or a Cuisinart or a Wii or a trip to Maui … but the deep-pocketed sponsors haven’t found me yet (nor have the empty-pocketed ones, come to think of it), so I’m starting small.
Good luck!

Sweet, I will SO do this contest
I love John Mayer!
Only problem is that I have tons of favourite artists so it’s hard to pick just one.
An all-time fav, though:
Sam Roberts.
Fav album of his? oh…I guess “We were born in a flame”
.-= Rose´s last blog ..Photo montage: Anniversary #2 =-.
Thank God I’m not a douchebag who writes “FIRST!” when writing the first post in a comment section. Seriously, what is the appeal there? Annnnnyway, I’d like to weigh in on the “favorite musical artist and/or album” topic. To do so, I must take you back to a much simpler time…1987…when my hair was big and my butt was not…back when metal ruled…and Def Leppard totally rocked my world with their album “Hysteria.” Truly, there was not a song on that tape, er, CD, that didn’t knock my socks off. I mean, come on…”Animal,” “Love Bites,” Armageddon It” – all PURE AWESOME SAUCE. To this day, if I’m in a funk, I take a Glucophage pill, throw down some devil horns, and blast “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” Huh. I suddenly want to go put on a leather mini skirt and some blue eyeshadow. Is that wrong?
Awesome! Really hoping if I get picked, you’d be willing to ship the CD to India
Favorite artist? Easy. The Beatles. The Blue Album. Because they are cute and basically were TS Elliot put to music
Metallica, (The Black Album). Back then I was in college and thought I knew it all. It’s hilarious to be 40 now and realize how little I really knew back then. I still love Metallica though and while Death Magnetic is an awesome album, I survived some pretty stupid decisions when “The Black Album” was the shit. Nowadays, my goal to keep up with the tempo of their songs while on the elliptical has nearly brought about a stroke (sort of). Nothing like James Hetfield screaming in your ear for motivation……

Hrmm…free stuff is fun. Many of my blog lurkers have surfaced by dangling something trivial in front of them…it works!
For me:
Artist: Loudon Wainwright III
Album: Unrequited
There is no good reason for me to love this music. He’s older than my dad, and yet I’ve seen him in concert more than my dad has…even though my dad loves him too.
Friends come over and browse through my iTunes collection and inevitably Lucy has some splaining to do. I’ve got around 25 different albums from Loudon Wainwright III. I think I have one of his son, Rufus’ works.

Hmmm…this is a rough question. I’m more of a SONG person than an entire album person. I will say that there was a period of time in college when I loved loved loved Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park. I understand if that disqualifies me from the contest.
Hmmm . . . my kids would tell you it’s Continuum. But since you already mentioned that, I’ll try to be a little more original.
So many genres, so many choices . . .
It being practically the Christmas season, I’ll go with Al Green’s The Christmas Album. Listen to him sing “O Holy Night,” and tell me you don’t get goosebumps. He could sing anything, and it would be spectacular.

Long time lurker, first time commenter.
I would have to say that my favorite album of all time is TMBG: Flood. I bought it for one song in the 8th grade to do a lip sync and ended up LOVING them and becoming quite obsessed.
Of course, now that I’m a mom, it’s been a while since I’ve actually bought a cd, hence the old school choice.
Free stuff will bring me out from the dark…
favorite album Rocky Horror Picture Show. What can I say, I was raised right. HA!
Dan Fogelberg, The Innocent Age, is one of my all-time favorites. But I like lots of different music and lots of artists. That’s just the first one that popped to mind. I miss Dan…
.-= toadmama´s last blog ..You Be the Judge =-.
Yeah, I heard that John Mayer’s goal was for that every song on this new album would be good in an American Idol audition. I’m not kidding. I saw him say that in an interview. ‘Cause being sung in an American Idol audition is the mark of quality music.
Okay, I really can’t pinpoint a favorite, but one of the most coherent, best for listening straight through in one sitting CDs ever is… American Idiot by Green Day.
.-= EG´s last blog ..A Smorgasboard =-.
My favorite artist is Jack Johnson (in front of a mike and a camera) and his best album is In Between Dreams!
Nice!
My Irish blood is screaming that U2 is the all time best band ever.
But I could be wrong about that because I also rock out to Linkin Park when the kids are driving me insane.
The truth is, I have tons of bands I consider my favorites, it just depends on the time of the month and what I really want is to win SOMETHING since Pioneer Woman has yet to grace me with a pair of those awesome cowboy boots.

Favorite artist: Violent Femmes
Favorite album: Add it Up
It’s an album I come back to time and time again. It brings back memories of a wonderful time in my life and I can always count on it to make me smile.
.-= Beth´s last blog ..Have you seen me lately? =-.
Favorite artist: Ben Folds Favorite album: Supersunnyspeedgraphics, the LP
Way to ask me a hard questions first thing in the morning. I have too many favorites, so let’s go with:
Norah Jones
Come Away With Me
Such a classic album.
.-= Casey´s last blog ..Coming Soon… I promise! =-.
I know the artists, not the album but any thing Queen makes me happy.
It’s hard to pick a favorite, so I’ll list one I’m most apt to sing to (aloud, in the car) — and that would be Sugarland. All three of their albums are equally awesome, so I’d just load up all three and drive!
.-= Jen A.´s last blog ..How the show ends =-.
The Police
Every Breathe You Take: The Classics
My favorite band is Barenaked Ladies. And I think their best album is “Gordon”, their very first. The music and lyrics are just fun and it makes me smile every time I hear it!
Flogging Molly—Swagger. L-O-V-E It. Love everything about it!
Lately, Blue October: Approaching Normal. I enjoy listening to my kids sing “Jump Rope”
Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson
Take it to the Limit
Classic!

Hi!
Wandered over from Pioneer Woman when I saw your link in comments and got curious!
I have to go old-school (also known as showing just how OLD I am) and say my favourite is The Police and I think their ‘Synchronicity’ album is my favourite of all of them.
I still remember getting it when I was a kid… great cover… even better music inside.
It is one of the few *records* I have actually kept (even if I don’t have anything to play it on!).
Norah Jones, Come Away with Me So mellow and I can sing along to my heart’s content…ahhh….
I have to say it depends on my mood. I love James Taylor when I am in a mellow mood, Green Day when I’m in a punky mood, Poison and Van Halen when I’m in my back in the day mood, Rage Against the Machine in a ‘happy’ mood, I could go on and on, I have very eclectic taste in music…
I have many fave albums: currently Pink’s Funhouse.
One of the best albums of all time, though, in my opinion (I am going to totally date myself here) is REM’s Green. Every song is a good one (except Stand), especially the hidden tracks. I could still listen to that album every day.
.-= maggie´s last blog ..hark the herald angels sing… =-.
Johnny Cash…man in black. hands down the best.
Favorite band– Zeppelin, Album– Any of them really.
Very hard to pick one but I have to go with an oldie, Springsteen, Nebraska.
Solid, not all worked over, raw…
Another person commented that it is difficult to name a favorite album and I would have to agree, but since those are the rules I have to go with (drumroll please)
Peter Gabriel
Us
Why? Because it has the song Kiss That Frog.
.-= Wendy´s last blog ..What’s that I smell? =-.
My favourite artist of the moment – Dub FX. AMAZING stuff he’s done! So there’s only one album of his stuff seeing as his not very mainstream and is kinda an underground artist.
Favorite artist of all time is hands down QUEENSRYCHE

Favorite Album: EMPIRE
.-= Deborah´s last blog ..Moose =-.
Weezer’s Blue Album. Every song on it has been my favorite song at one point or another in my life, and a Blue Album song NEVER gets skipped when it comes on during an iPod shuffle.
.-= Joe´s last blog ..How to Make a Latte =-.
It’s way too hard to pick just one.
But here goes:
Favorite artist of all time: Reba McEntire
Favorite Album by her: For My Broken Heart
.-= kim´s last blog ..Addictive Personality Much? =-.
Since I am fully defined by my MOMMY status I have to amp up the cheesy teeny bop music which my 3 year old ADORES! I am going to go with…
Fearless by Taylor Swift
that is in our cd player in the car and my little girl says “You belong with Me” is our song! awwww sweeeeeet! Are you barfing chunks now?? check out my sweet cheeks at

Okay, I know we’re supposed to narrow it down to just one, but there are only 2 cds I can listen to, from beginning to end, without having to skip any songs. For that fact alone, I think they both deserve mentioning:
William Topley: Black River – It’s so…bluesy and jazzy with a touch of classic rock thrown in. I love it.
Evans Blue: Melody and the Energetic Nature of Volume – the name is a mouthful but the songs are great and just flow from one to the next, before you know it you’re at the end, starting the disk over.
Bjork:Post
Dead Can Dance: Into the Labyrinth
And lots of others…

Love John Mayer. Favorite artist right now is Nickelback…..love them and all their albums!
I love all sorts of music except celine dion and that ilk…Tom Waits is a fave and i can never get tired of the good old stand-by Beattles, rubber Soul.I never win anything so am not worried that I may win and not like battle Studies. I can so relate to your mood of the day- I want to crawl under the electrc balnket with some chips and just…die.
.-= linda sue´s last blog ..Out on a blustery evening =-.
I love some good old Tom Petty, Wildflowers. I could listen to that album all day.
I hate these kind of questions, but I do like John Mayer. One of my faves is Jack Johnson, still so sad that I missed his concert last year!
.-= Dcan´s last blog ..You Capture – Sunsets =-.
Hands down, Van Morrison – Moondance (though Tupelo Honey is a close 2nd).
I have many favorites and I am adding new ones all the time. My favorite lately is Fanfarlo and their album Reservoir.
I have a thing for music, so I couldn’t not answer. However, take me out of the running for the John Mayer, thanks. I am sure there are people who would appreciate it more than I would. For the record, I don’t hate him!!
.-= Kelly´s last blog ..102_1510-copy =-.
Oh wow this is hard. I am a song person too and I don’t buy a lot of cd’s although I did just buy Eminem’s newest for my husband.
I would have to say my altime fav album is Matthew Good Band – Beautiful Midnight. I love almost every song and I can sing along to them all, it’s just good stuff.
Ray Lamontagne, Gossip in the Grain. Although the first album completely melted my legs and turned me to jello as well. The powerful voice, the poetic lyrics packed into a tall somewhat meek bearded man slays me.
.-= Stacey Ball´s last blog ..16 Weeks! =-.
artist: Keb’Mo’
album: Keep it Simple
Now normally I like to rock out a little more, but this is one guy I could listen to forever and never get tired of it. I’ve seen him live 3 times and he is so fun and the epitome of cool. Check out the tracks “One Friend” and “Shave Yo’ Legs”
one more note: When I saw John Mayer live about 3 years ago, I experienced almost exactly the same thing you did in your entry “the time I accidentally got shit-faced.” I have very little memory of that concert, so a CD would be great!
#21 Carrie: Flogging Molly ROCKS! Love that stuff.
Tough call as it keeps changing, but TODAY my all-time fave would have to be Heart. My hair tended to grow taller and wider over the years right along with theirs.
Who DOESN’T love “Barracuda”? Who, I ask?? But overall, their best album was the first, Dreamboat Annie. “Crazy, crazy on youuuuuuuu…”
oooh free stuff.
Favorite album that every single song is awesome has to be;
smashing pumpkins, Siamese dream.
Phew, this is hard. I’m kinda torn between ‘Head on the Door’ by The Cure, and ’52nd Street’ by Billy Joel and ‘Unplugged’ by Alejandro Sanz and ‘These Days’ by Bon Jovi and… Ok, I’ll stop now.
Uh. Stretch Princess (self-titled), Mika (Life in Cartoon Motion). Many, many others.
Good luck with the rest of the week. I know from experience that parenting and paying writing projects are not always a match well made.

I don’t think I have a ONE all time favorite album!
I do, however, love the Beatles, Abbey Road.
My son loves John Mayer. He’s a teen and hard to please, so I’d love to win him over with a CD
James Taylor and ALL his albums are my favorites. I cannot pick one and only one.
Artist: Citizen Cope
Album: The Clarence Greenwood Recordings
It is hard to name a favorite though. I like all kinds of music.
Hello and rock on.
My favorite artist of all time is Rob Thomas. So my favorite band is of course Matchbox 20. I know, I’m a loser. My favorite album by them is Mad Season because teh song of the same name really speaks to me.
*crosses fingers* that I win.
.-= Karen´s last blog ..A Decision To Be Made =-.
A few random favorites…
Bob Marley, Exodus
Duke Ellington, Indigos
Earth Wind and Fire, September (hit single later added to a best of album)
Kelly Bell Band – Phat Blues Music, Aint Like it Used to Be, I’m just sayin…any album, really.
Why does it keep telling me that my comment seems a bit spammy?
How embarrassing, but I will have to say Guns N Roses Appetite for Destruction. I just never get sick of it.
Yum! I love me some free stuff! And I haven’t had an actual brand new CD in YEARS.
Favorite Band? Eagles
Favorite Song? Wasted Time
.-= Candi´s last blog ..Come Sail Away… =-.
WAY to hard to pick one..but the ones that are true to the test, and stand out the most as a whole album are in no particular order except release date ha!
1. Van Morrison, Moon dance
2. Led Zeppelin IV
3. Prince, Purple rain
4. Beck, Geuro
Aint that an eclectic array! Also throw in some old Waylon Jennings and Beethoven!
As many have already said, music sort of depends on mood, but if I had to narrow it down, I would have to say that Pink Floyd’s The Wall is definitely towards the top of my list. In a totally different genre, I must say that I probably listened to NIN Pretty Hate Machine and Downward Spiral more than most other albums. And of course Pearl Jam’s Ten. Am I dating myself here yet? Did I mention that I also love the 80s hair bands? And that I grew up on Anne Murray?
Starting small is the best way to start
All time favorite is Led Zeppelin. Love all the albums, but really like Houses of the Holy the best. That may change tomorrow, who knows?
RHCP: Californication
Love Pink, Matchbox 20, John Mayer
–>If stranded on a desert island that of course had electricity to play a cd I would take…
Bob Marley – Legend
It never gets old and I got married in Jamaica.
(I bought “Who Says” off that John Mayer album and was curious if the rest was any good.)

Lurker for awhile from PDub’s site… I love your style though!
I have so many favorites, but my far and away absolute fav band of all time is Cold Play – they seriously got me through college.
Fav album: A Rush of Blood to the Head (I listened to Clocks on loop for hours at a time while studying OChem and A&P and I still can’t get enough of them; weird, I know!)
Dave Matthews Band!
Sadly, I must say that there are only a handful of songs that I can’t appreciate, so I am unable to nail down one album! Let’s just say that….if you want to wind down at the end of a long day, I highly recommend listening to Dave Matthews Band, whilst sipping a glass of red wine!
Other favs-Brett Dennen, Jack Johnson, John Mayer (I actually try to feature a few favs on my blog…listed under music.)
.-= Stephanie´s last blog ..A Sure Case of Mistaken Identity =-.
Skynyrd…any and all albums…nuff said.
Probably the CD I have listened to the longest over the course of my life would be Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory. When that first came out, I could not stop listening to it over and over and over FOREVER!
Favorite artist? Pre-1980 Elton John. Album? Madman Across The Water.
